Join this session for tips on how to use your camera settings to creatively capture nature in a visually interesting way. We will be looking at composition, focus, and colour.

Many professional offices and places of business have large prints gracing their wall space of things such as fields of flowers, a butterfly perched on a leaf, and a single dew drop on a rose petal. These beautiful images are all around us in nature. It just takes that special "eye" to not only see it but to capture it in a way that will turn that simple little piece of nature into a beautiful piece of art. We will learn how to use different angles, light and shadows, and settings to make subjects pop.

Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Saturday 30 March
Centennial Park - 1pm - 2 Hours
Eastern Suburbs Photography Group
Mel Koutchavlis
This workshop is all about using various techniques to maximise the behaviour of the light. Backlighting is one of my favourites and can be used for portraiture or nature. Bokeh is Japanese for blur but is a term used for soft out of focus balls of light which can look very pleasing. Burst in this case is star burst which can be achieved when you have strong areas of light and a correct choice of aperture. Use all three to create some amazing compositions.

It was great in that Shayne taught us the basics of photography and explained it in such simple terms that enable me to understand it more clearly - ie we can use a Camera to show what we see: in that ISO is our eyes, Aperture is our pupil and Shutter Speed is when we blink. Shayne also helped explain in the practical sense of how to take a photo, taking into consideration these 3 aspects and thereby ensuring we can get the best photo possible in any situation. Shayne was both very encouraging and positive with her feedback providing us with even more tips on how to improve a shot that after the workshop I felt enthused to go and practice all that I learnt. Thanks

Shayne Leslie was excellent in assisting all the people in the group who were at varying levels in their photography journey. She began the session with some basic principles and challenged us with new suggestions though out the session. She even took us to areas along the Trig where we saw some beautiful wildflowers and coastal water views, so that we could practise our skills and experiment with different landscapes and scenery. Shayne was also very supportive in her feedback and gave us advice and suggestions on how to improve the shot. I enjoyed the session so much at this site, that I even came back the next morning with my husband and daughter at sunrise to capture it from that vantage point and then did a bit of a bush trek through the park and took more photos in the hope that I was able to enhance my photography skills more.
